The new Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1983. Production began twelve months later. Chassis. Each 2.3-16 was based on a standard 190 pressed steel bodyshell complete with 2665mm wheelbase. At the front, the 190 had a MacPherson strut and separate spring arrangement.

The compact and technologically groundbreaking saloon supplemented the Mercedes-Benz passenger car product line with a third model series, alongside the mid-range series and the S-Class.

Mercedes introduced a new top-of-the-range 190 to their product line in Paris; the 190 E 2.5-16 was a replacement for the 2.3-16, production of which had ceased in June '88. The 2.3-16 had been conceived as a Group A homologation special which meant at least 5000 had to be built within a twelve month timeframe.

Five years after the original Cosworth-tuned 190 E 2.3-16 broke cover at Frankfurt in September 1983, Mercedes got serious about a motor sport programme for the car. The firm's initial reluctance to compete with their W201-based hot rod was the result of it having been completely unsuited to Mercedes' original plan to go Group A rallying; against four-wheel drive opposition, the 190 would.

Impressively light for its size and quality, the 190 didn't compromise on structural integrity but became prone to rust in old age, as thinner steel in low-stress areas could be penetrated more rapidly - despite strategic zinc-plating and wax-injected box-sections.
